Empowering others to achieve

empowering others to achieve

You may have seen this statement on our website. Empowering others is a purpose I live by and use as my guide in everything that I do.

Empowering people is important to me, and a very big part of what I do each day is being a role model, giving people the skills and confidence to help them reach their full potential. My desire is to create a better world for everyone whose lives are touched by Empower Construction’s products and services.
Picture
Empower means making someone stronger and more confident.

I find that the word ‘empower’ is often taken lightly, but for me it has significant meaning. Empower means making someone stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. It means increasing the capacity of individuals and groups, so that they have the confidence to make their own choices and plans.

I’m extremely lucky to share his philosophy with my beautiful wife Julia, who is not only my life partner but also my business partner, and Ryan & Juliatogether we’ve worked really hard to build up a successful and ethical business.

7 Years ago, we started our business from my small car, but we quickly outgrew that and now we are employing 35 people. There are so many families that we are close to, it is a great feeling. I love working with Julia, as we make a great team. I have many great ideas, but Julia always asks me to clarify and helps me to get things done.

If you work hard and you want something, you’ll be able to achieve it

We are very focused on putting all the right systems in place so that the business is not dependent on us, because eventually we want to use Empower Construction as a vehicle to reach our higher goal, which is to help underprivileged youth in Western Sydney. We want to show young people that if you work hard and you want something, you can achieve it, no matter where you are from.

Our goal is already underway through giving young people between 16-25 for the opportunity to work at Empower Construction and to learn new skills. We have such a strong and positive culture and with the right support, we can truly make a difference to young people.

We are also implementing a prisoner’s work release program, to help people get their lives back on track. We are very comfortable with employing these people and are very open about this with our clients. We believe that if people make a mistake, they should be given a second chance.

One of my greatest inspirations is my first cousin in South Africa. He was a person that nobody expected anything of and this made him very strong and determined. He started washing cars in the neighbourhood and nowadays he runs the second biggest cleaning company in South Africa. During this process from nobody to successful businessmen, my cousin has stayed the same person; always friendly, always looking for the best in people and always bringing joy to everyone around him. And on top of this, he is very humble.

Inspired by the positive impacts Empowering youth can have, we are planning the launch of Empowering Communities later this year. Empowering Communities is a youth outreach organisation founded by the board of directors of Empower Construction. Its focus is to unite the community, and to connect young people with the opportunities available to them through various programs plus some more that we’ll develop along the way. Stay tuned for more news later.

Every new day is an opportunity to make a positive difference

Another big inspiration for us is our faith. That’s what gets us through everything and we start each day with a bible reading. Every new day is an opportunity to make a positive difference. We get inspired and motivated by what we are doing, the growth we are having, how many lives we are effecting, the changes we are making in the industry and the great lightweight construction products that we have.

Exercise also plays a big part in my life and the Empower Construction Team have participated in the ‘Corporate Fight’ fitness events in the last year. It is all about challenging yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone. It is a good reflection of how hard life can be and how hard you have to train if you want something. It is not about winning, but it is about the mutual respect for the other participants. It was a great experience for the Empower team.

Always make sure you work for a purpose and not for the money

My tip for living an Empowered life is to believe in yourself, follow your dreams and be confident that you can achieve anything, as long as you put your mind to it. Work hard and have faith. Always make sure you work for a purpose and not for the money. The purpose will always outweigh the money.

Polystyrene is changing the way we think about construction

Polystyrene is changing the way we think about construction

When we think of polystyrene, most of us imagine white cups at picnics that can be crushed between two fingers, picked apart and destroyed in seconds. Nothing could be further from those thoughts when it comes to the polystyrene used in construction – a lightweight material quickly gaining popularity for use in walls and trims.

Expanded polystyrene foam is used as a cladding system, ideal for residential and commercial construction. Available in panel form, known as EPS, it’s used for external walls, profiles and moulds. Polystyrene is lightweight but extremely strong once rendered and offers high insulation and thermal properties, termite resistance and fire retardant capabilities. The product is lightweight making it easy to handle and quick to install and clean up afterwards.
Picture
Lightweight construction specialists Empower Construction, supply and install only the best EPS on the market.

Ryan Steyn, Managing Director of Empower Construction says “We love working with EPS because of its high quality, strength and durability. Our clients are really impressed with the end result”.

EPS panels are made from high quality expanded polystyrene foam that displays high insulation values (R4 – R7). When used in conjunction with high-quality render, it creates a weatherproof barrier that delivers high thermal performance and a build of structural integrity.
Picture
With it being harder than ever for homeowners to enter the property market, they need to be sure they are making the right long-term choices. Residential developers and builders can assist by using EPS Facade Systems. The high insulation values of EPS can, over time, potentially save money on energy costs and slimline walls, allowing for more internal space.

This flexible product can be fixed to steel, timber or masonry surfaces and is adaptable to practically any shape, size or application, providing endless design opportunities. The cladding is more thermally efficient in comparison with other insulation materials because it’s installed on the outside of the frame so the wall cavity doesn’t get as hot in the summer or as cool in the winter.
It’s easy to install and with reduced construction times, you’ll be able to deliver the project earlier, saving time and money. By using a reputable installer such as Empower Construction, you not only have the benefit of their experience and expertise, you’re also covered by manufacturer warranties, giving you peace of mind.

Have a chat to us today to see how we can incorporate EPS into your next build!

Lightweight  helped Ichijo Create 7 Star Energy Saving Homes

Lightweight helped Ichijo Create 7 Star Energy Saving Homes

Ichijo Technology Homes decided to incorporate Hebel PowerPanels in their home designs. The reason for this was to give customers more options in energy saving that could achieve a minimum of 7 star energy rating. Ichijo was impressed with Hebel’s energy efficiency, acoustic capability and construction efficiency.

Following industry recommendation, Ichijo’s Construction Manager Brian Willis contacted Ryan Steyn of Empower Construction about supplying and installing the Hebel PowerPanels.
Picture
Ichijo had specific requirements regarding the dimensions needed, and in particular sought a thicker wall than was standard with Hebel in order to achieve a higher energy efficient rating. As lightweight construction specialists Empower was able to customise a system of installation, and have it approved by CSR – the manufacturer of Hebel. The system devised means that the battens used are of a thicker gauge, allowing Ichijo to achieve the desired wall thickness without voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.

Ichijo also wanted to create a larger window reveal to accommodate shutters or window furnishings. Empower Construction’s method of installing the Hebel panels was able to meet this requirement, plus they were able to provide an end-to-end solution including the supply of Hebel PowerPanels, along with installation, rendering and painting services
Picture
Mr Willis was very pleased with the Hebel products, the solution developed and the quality and efficiency of the installation, rendering and painting services. “Our company tagline is ‘Energy Efficient Homes’ and the Hebel panels installed using the custom method make an important contribution to this objective,” said Mr Willis.

The speed of installation and finish is an attribute Ichijo particularly values.

“A Hebel PowerPanel measuring 600 X 2800 panel replaces the need to lay 95 bricks,” said Mr Willis. “This means we can complete projects faster which has multiple benefits for the project, including reducing the length of time the building could be affected by weather.”

“We’re really pleased with the high level of interest in the homes,” said Mr Willis. “This is translating into strong sales for these designs.”

Fire retardant: just one very important benefitS of lightweight building materials

The recent bushfires in New South Wales are a harsh reminder of the challenging environment in which we all live. While scientists and politicians argue over climate changing being the cause, the fact remains; most Australians are living in homes that are not conducive to the extreme conditions they sometimes need to face.

The good news is that the building industry is addressing this problem and there are many alternative methods and materials on the market that not only offer fire retardant properties but also many other benefits.

With building requirements becoming increasingly stringent, lightweight construction is an area seeing rapid growth and its inherent materials provide some extraordinary benefits.
Picture
For example, materials such as AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) are noncombustible and are suitable for fire prone areas providing peace of mind for homeowners.

Other benefits of lightweight construction for builders and homeowners include:

• Tough as traditional materials – materials such as AAC are strong and significantly easier to manage and lift than their equivalent area in masonry/concrete, yet lightweight.
• Environmental performance – AAC offers good insulation properties and can deliver energy savings, by way of reduced heating and cooling requirements, well beyond those of traditional building methods.
• Faster turn around – lightweight construction can be up to 75% faster than traditional
Construction, so homeowners can begin to enjoy their new home earlier.
• Cost reductions – lightweight construction materials such as AAC and polystyrene are more cost effective than traditional materials such as rendered brick.
• Sound insulation properties – the tiny air pockets that are a feature of most lightweight building products create excellent sound insulation.
• Design versatility – lightweight construction can be sculpted to resemble brickwork, tiles, timber or other decorative features.
• Pest resistance – lightweight construction materials do not attract vermin or termites.
• Good looks – contrary to popular belief, lightweight construction offers a beautiful finish that suits a wide variety of building styles.

Ryan Steyn, Director of Empower Construction – specialists in advising and building in lightweight, says, “Given the many benefits, lightweight is becoming the future of our building landscape. We are seeing more and more developers turn to lightweight and seeing it in a new ‘light’, so to speak.

“Gone are the days of clunky, bland looking, concrete blocks. Today’s lightweight materials are extremely flexible in design so they look great, and they’re so easy and quick to work with. More importantly they offer homeowners protection from extreme conditions, such as bushfires.”

With more and more lightweight materials coming onto the market, it’s important for builders to stay abreast of these products and to consider them, particularly for regional areas where safety is crucial.

Would you swap bricks for AAC?

Read Now

Would you swap bricks for aac?

Not everyone likes change. It challenges our confidence and creates uncertainty. But what if the change meant achieving the same results quicker and more efficiently?

This sums up lightweight construction. It’s the technology of the building industry but not everyone’s ready to adopt it. However those that have are benefiting from the many advantages the products and process provides. In particular, residential developers are turning to lightweight for faster turn around and to on-sell the advantages to their customers.
So what is lightweight construction and how does it work?

Put simply, lightweight materials replace bricks and mortar and are quicker and cheaper to work with. Timber or light gauge steel framing are used to provide the structural support, then the non-structural cladding – made from materials such as autoclave aerated concrete (AAC) e.g. Hebel – is attached to the framework.
Picture

AAC is a proven building product that has been used in Europe for more than 70 years, and in Australia for over 20 years. It’s made by mixing an expanding agent to concrete, causing tiny air bubbles to form. The cement is then cured in a heated environment, and while soft, sliced to size. Panels or blocks are formed then steam cured in an autoclave, making them strong and contributing to their much valued thermal and acoustic capability.

AAC, along with other more recent innovations in lightweight building materials, such as polystyrene and other such external claddings, continue to evolve to deliver substantial advantages to builders and the people who will inhabit the building once completed. Some of these benefits include:
  • Cost effectiveness – fewer construction processes that reduce construction time and costs.
  • Strength and durability – delivers a solid building that stands the test of time in any environment.
  • Ease of handling – light to transport and extremely quick to install, construction can be completed in days, not weeks.
  • Safe and sound – strong thermal, acoustic and fire retardant qualities make it the perfect choice for the harsh Australian environment.
  • Pleasing aesthetics – ideally suited to a wide range of modern building styles, lightweight materials can be moulded or routed to create interesting visual effects and contemporary aesthetics.
  • Cleaner to work with – quicker and easier to clean up traditional materials. This provides advantages when moving trades through site and delivering the project on time.
  • Light on the environment – Australian made, produced using less energy that traditional materials, easily stored and transported, and with built in insulation saving on energy bills – lightweight construction is a win-win for planet earth, developers and clients alike.
  • Furthermore the products have fire retardant properties so with our harsh climate it seems reasonable to consider alternative building materials that better suit the environment and reduce risk. Maybe your next project would benefit from lightweight construction.
